Factory Seconds host "Open Factory" events at Baldwin Wallace

December 4, 2017

Factory Second’s Brass Trio offers a groundbreaking Fall at BW.

The initial “Open Factory” on September 17, 2017 offered BW brass students an opportunity to sight read and rehearse with the trio. Using a “musical chairs” approach, trumpet, horn and trombone students rotated into the trio, while one Factory Second was dutifully discarded. In addition to Arcadelt chansons, and Clint Needham’s Mobiles, Richard and Jesse lead Hidas's low brass trio to include student tubists. Hindemith’s Morgen Musik augmented the musical offerings to a quartet. To culminate the reading, FSBT with the help of our ambitious student participants expanded to a quintet to read movements from Anthony Plog’s Four Sketches.

On November 17, Factory Seconds held their second “Open Factory” rehearsal. Students were offered a “behind the scenes” look at how the trio rehearses new pieces - combining good fun and humor with serious music making. The trio sight-read a movement from Bach’s Goldberg Variations, a new Sutte arrangement of a movement from the Mass of Tournai, David Loeb’s new setting of his Legends for a Zither-type instrument for brass trio, Bentzon’s emphatic Trio, and Mueleman's quirky 2nd Trio.
